WALTER TRAGERT

“Walter Tragert knew he needed HOME. How did he know? The mice told him so. The mice gnawed through the insulation on the electrical wiring in Walter’s falling down RV. Living in a RV ain’t no easy thing to do. Sure, it is living—in a fashion–in a way that no singer songwriter for generations of Austin’s children should have to abide. Walter and HOME Austin found each other just in time.

His mom imbued Walter with a can-do attitude, a keep on the sunny side of the street soul. From his dad Walter learned to, ‘identify the problem then focus on solutions.’ And that’s exactly what Walter did for the longest. ‘I don’t need nobody to help me, I can do it all by myself,’ as the old blues refrain goes. And that was Walter. He did it all by himself until he couldn’t.

Walter’s body was another matter. He needed a wheelchair to get around. He needed entryways wide enough to accommodate a person with physical limitations. HOME Austin saw what was happening and lent a helping hand. Everything changed. Walter has safe housing at long last and the RV is in the rearview. HOME is welcome, anytime, all the time.” – Bobby Earl Smith

“The minute I stopped trying to be the toughest guy in the world, I realized that I was one of the luckiest. Had a nice visit from a mobile neuro PT today. Optimism is a useful thing. I also bought strings for five different instruments. Kerrang!” – Walter Tragert

Walter’s physical therapist asked how he likes his new place. “Oh yeah, it’s great.  Flush toilets!”
